Loneliness is one of the biggest and yet one of the least talked about issues in the U.K right now. Thanks to the pandemic and the lockdowns it is, unfortunately, something that is only increasing, with over 5% of all adults in the U.K feeling lonely often or always. How can we, the Church, come alongside those who are alone?

The bible may have been written thousands of years ago but it can speak to our present situations so perfectly and this verse from Hebrews sums up what we should be doing.

‘And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching’ (Hebrews 10:24-25).

God created us to be there for one another and in this hurting world we all need the kindness that Jesus brings. So, I am proposing that we spread Jesus’ love through the form of baked goods.

Baking a delicious treat for your neighbour, knocking on their door and presenting them with it may be the brightest moment of their week. It may also be a great way of starting a Jesus-focused conversation. But just the simple joy of a present having been made specifically for them could be exactly what they need if they are feeling low and needing comfort.

Whatever the result, spreading more joy in this world is definitely a good thing. You can see below a simple recipe for some scrumptious chocolate brownies that will bring a smile to anyone!
